On September 16, 2025, the Department of Surgery at Tri-Service General Hospital held a book launch for the Chinese version of the Washington Manual of Surgery, 9th edition. This translation, which took over a year to complete, marks the successful adaptation of the internationally renowned surgical reference book into Chinese. The manual, a classic clinical tool blending theory and practice, is now officially available for the domestic medical community, providing medical students and healthcare professionals with timely and practical knowledge.
First published in 1974, the Washington Manual of Surgery has long been regarded as an essential reference for surgeons, covering fundamental principles, diagnostic processes, treatment guidelines, and surgical techniques. It is widely used in residency training and clinical decision-making. This translation project was conceptualized by Major General Tsai Jian-Song, Director of the Military Medical Bureau and President of the Taiwan Society of Surgery, and was led by the Department of Surgery at Tri-Service General Hospital. A team of specialist attending physicians contributed to the translation, ensuring professional accuracy and consistency in meaning across clinical fields.
Major General Tsai emphasized that the book has been specially tailored to fit Taiwan’s clinical environment and healthcare system. Content adjustments and terminology optimization were made to enhance accessibility and reading efficiency, further strengthening the connection between academic teaching and clinical practice. The book, presented in the native language, enables medical students, residents, and specialists to quickly search for information, while also assisting clinical teams in making real-time judgments and communications in the field.
The publication of this translation represents a significant achievement in the integration of knowledge transfer and clinical practice. Looking ahead, the hospital plans to continue localizing medical professional content and aligning it with international standards, striving for dual improvements in medical education and the quality of patient care.
