On March 25, 2025, President Lai Ching-Te personally attended and presided over the inauguration ceremony of the Aerospace Medicine Building at the Songshan Branch of Tri-Service General Hospital. He commended the branch’s significant medical contributions during major public health crises in Taiwan and encouraged the medical staff to continue serving both military personnel and civilians following the building’s inauguration.

The Aerospace Medicine Building was officially inaugurated on March 25, 2025. Among its key facilities is the Aeromedical Examination Center, which is equipped with advanced diagnostic instruments such as ultra-wide-field fundus photography scanners and 3D optical coherence tomography (OCT) systems. These technologies enhance the quality and precision of flight medical examinations, enabling aircrew members to better monitor and manage their health.

Construction of the Aerospace Medicine Building began in 2021 and was completed in 2025. The building houses the Aeromedical Examination Center, operating rooms, and inpatient wards. The Aeromedical Examination Center provides specialized medical examinations and health screenings for aircrew, ensuring they maintain the physical condition necessary for flight duties. It serves as a vital guardian of aircrew health.

The center features an ultra-wide-field fundus photography scanner capable of capturing 200-degree wide-angle images with autofluorescence, enabling early detection of retinal diseases and allowing pilots to understand their retinal health. It also includes 3D OCT equipment for the diagnosis of glaucoma, retinal, and optic nerve conditions.

Additionally, the center is equipped with a pilot visual function analyzer and pure-tone audiometry equipment to assess visual and auditory abilities during flight medical exams. The visual function analyzer is required for both active pilots and pilot applicants and simulates various flight conditions—including daytime, nighttime, and glare scenarios—to evaluate depth perception. The pure-tone audiometer measures the lowest sound intensity a person can hear at different frequencies, helping identify hearing abnormalities early.

Notably, the Aerospace Medicine Building is the first green hospital in the Songshan area. Constructed with eco-friendly methods, it also includes a public art landscape park promoting coexistence with nature and biodiversity. The building has been awarded the Silver Green Building Label and the Bronze Intelligent Building Label.

In his remarks, President Lai stated that he was honored to visit the Air Force's frontline medical facility—Tri-Service General Hospital Songshan Branch—and join the medical staff in celebrating the opening of the new Aerospace Medical Building. On behalf of the people of Taiwan, he expressed gratitude to the Ministry of National Defense, the Medical Affairs Bureau, the Tri-Service General Hospital, and all staff at the Songshan Branch for their dedication. He wished that the newly inaugurated facility would not only serve military personnel and benefit the public, but also elevate the standards of aerospace medicine in Taiwan.
