Tri-Service General Hospital (TSGH) continues to deepen innovation in key medical technologies, focusing on patent development and industry-academia collaboration. TSGH actively participates in the pursuit of the highest honor in Taiwan’s biomedical and health technology fields–the "National Innovation Award." This year, in partnership with Academia Sinica and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Tri-Service General Hospital has won 2 National Innovation Awards and 4 National Innovation Excellence Awards, once again demonstrating its extraordinary achievements in medical innovation.

Dr. Yuan-Hao Chen, TSGH superintendent, stated that Tri-Service General Hospital has always placed the patient at its core and continues to break through in medical technologies, gradually building its strength. This year, the team led by Director Dong-Yuan Hong of the Department of Neurosurgery, using a fruit fly model combined with AI technology, has created a new milestone for precision cancer medicine. Meanwhile, the team led by Director Wei-Xiu Liu from the same department successfully solved the high-cost issue of navigating equipment with an intelligent micro spinal guide system, innovatively integrating preoperative planning with surgical guide technology. Both teams were honored with the National Innovation Award.

In addition, several research and development teams from Tri-Service General Hospital, which have previously won the National Innovation Award, continue to deepen their innovations and have been awarded the "National Innovation Excellence Award." These include: Dr. Da-Yo Yu's team from the Department of Dentistry with their "Innovative Dental Aerosol Removal Device," Dr. Guan-Ying Zeng's team from the Department of Neurosurgery with their "Novel Biomarker of Blood Exosomes for Diagnosis and Prognosis of Parkinson's Disease," Director Wei-Xiu Liu's team from the Department of Neurosurgery with their "Innovative 3D Brain Surgery Training Simulation System," and Director Xun-An Zhang's team from the Department of Psychiatry with their "Subthreshold Brain Stimulation: A New Treatment Technique for Schizophrenia." These technologies, which are continuously being developed and promoted, have once again received recognition from the evaluators, highlighting TSGH’s strong research and development capabilities.

Director Hong Dong-Yuan (recipient of this year's Academic Research and Innovation Award) stated that the high recurrence rate and lethality of malignant tumors pose significant challenges to patients' quality of life and survival. The exploration of innovative therapies is now more urgent than ever. In collaboration with Academia Sinica and Fongfly Biotech, TSGH has integrated next-generation sequencing (NGS), artificial intelligence (AI), and a fruit fly screening platform to develop the world's leading "Adult Fruit Fly Glioblastoma Model and High-Throughput AI Drug Screening Platform." This breakthrough has successfully shortened drug screening time and significantly improved the efficiency of precision medicine, bringing revolutionary advancements to cancer treatment. Furthermore, this technology aligns with the internationally promoted 3R principles for animal experimentation (Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement) and is scheduled for expansion to lung and colorectal cancer applications, opening up new possibilities for future cancer treatments.

Director Liu Wei-Hsiu (recipient of this year's Clinical Innovation Award) stated that his team has developed an intelligent micro spinal guiding system that effectively reduces the risk of nerve damage caused by preoperative planning. The system provides precise preoperative planning and template guides for complex conditions such as spondylolisthesis, tumors, high cervical spine issues, and scoliosis. Its innovative design significantly shortens patient wait times, improves surgical accuracy, and reduces medical costs, contributing to a major breakthrough in the field of spinal surgery.

Outstanding achievements bestowed to Tri-Service General Hospital demonstrate the depth of TSGH teams’ interdisciplinary collaboration and the high degree of innovative technology. In the future, TSGH will remain committed to the mission of medical innovation, providing patients with even more precise and efficient healthcare solutions while advancing Taiwan’s medical technology to new heights.
