A woman in her 40s, who had previously tried weight loss medications and dietary control without achieving her desired weight loss results, was evaluated by our gastroenterology and hepatobiliary specialists. She then underwent Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG). The procedure carried low risks, and she was able to resume normal activities the following day. Her weight decreased from 70 kg before the surgery to 60 kg one month later, representing a total weight loss of about 10% in the first month. Her BMI dropped from 27.3 to 23.4, and she was highly satisfied with the outcome of the procedure.

Obesity is one of the negative factors affecting health, and while there are many ways to achieve weight loss, each method comes with its own limitations and risks. In addition to lifestyle changes, dietary control, and the use of medications, for individuals with a BMI of 27 or above, Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) is a good option to consider.

Dr. Chih-Wei Yang, attending physician of the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Biliary at our hospital, explains that the new Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) technique uses an endoscope to sutures the stomach, effectively reducing hunger and decreasing stomach volume. The weight loss effect can reach around 10–20%, and it also helps improve conditions associated with metabolic syndrome, such as hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes. This minimally invasive procedure is highly safe, taking only about 1.5 hours, with a recovery period of just one to two days. Moreover, compared to irreversible risks associated with gastric surgery, if any discomfort occurs after the endoscopic procedure, the sutures can be removed. Therefore, ESG is suitable for a wider range of patients, including those with mild obesity (BMI > 27) and metabolic syndrome, severely obese patients who do not wish to undergo invasive surgery, and those who have regained weight after prior weight loss surgery.

After undergoing Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG), patients can successfully reduce appetite and food intake. Dr. Yang encourages patients to actively collaborate with the medical team and follow professional dietary guidance, as this will further enhance the weight loss results. By doing so, they can regain a healthy lifestyle, prevent weight regain, and achieve a beautiful, sustainable outcome in the near future.
